Paint it Black

I was gonna start writing today, when I realised that this would look much better coming out of black (see ‘Hen to Pan’ post below). Everything just pops out much more, it has a much more three dimensional feel to it. And while I was scribbling away, all round the edges… I was trying to ‘write’ at the same time, trying to get the question, for an answer that I’ve already got. Now I’ve posted this I can concentrate on that.

And here’s some boards I did last week for a Mercedes commercial…

After I read Mat’s comment about not agreeing with my ‘black theory’ (see below), I felt the need to explain myself a bit more. Obviously I can’t do that to everyone who disagrees with me or doesn’t like something I post up, it would mean having far too much time on my hands. But since he’s my old mate & we’ve known each other since we were seventeen etc – I felt the need, so emailed him this… (this is the abridged version)

Firstly, mood wise, coming out of black now feels to me more like it’s coming from the murkier world of the subconscious, the place of fairy tales & archetypes etc. Which fits much better with what it’s going to be in the book.

It’s also a typical style of folk art to paint flowers etc on  a black background & I feel the subject matter really suits that.
Secondly, visually it feels much more balanced now, the white was too close in tone to the light yellow before, so now the contrast is better, which means that details like the exposed conker on the left, sings a little louder. The same with the flowers that flank the boy, that detail was swimming in white before, lost. The snake now also feels much more visible, probably due to the contrast between it’s pale underbelly & the black.
Another benefit is that the two magpies are knocked back a little by the black background, which is great because I think they were drawing the eye away too much from the boy, they took on a greater significance than they deserved in the previous one. Now it feels a lot more how I originally intended it to be. Now the white one seems very weak to me, wishy washy. The new one, much stronger & bolder, more straight to the point.

Mat hasn’t said whether he now agrees with me, just that he was pleased I took the time to explain myself.
Very clever the way he did that.

Whats with the black? Is it as in the Fast Show “ITS ALL BLACK, BLACK, BLACK” or is it more like Spinal Tap, as in it is NONE more black..

This and other dark colour related queries.
